- Say a few positive, encouraging words each morning to your child on testing days. (Be sure not to increase testing jitters!)
- Be sure your child is well rested on testing days.
- Ensure your child has breakfast each morning.
- Ensure your child is on time for school.
- This testing also gives your child an opportunity to demonstrate their learning and helps teachers plan the best possible instruction for them.
The following tips provide suggestions for how to approach test taking with your children.
Test Preparation Tips for Students
Pay attention to information that the teacher may give about the test.
Make sure you are in school on time on the day of the test.
Go over any material from practice tests, HW, sample problems, review material, the textbook, class notes...
Eat before a test. Having food in your stomach will give you energy and help you focus. Avoid heavy foods which can make you groggy and sugary foods which can make you hyper.
Get a good night’s sleep before the test.
Go to the bathroom before taking the test. You don't want to waste any time worrying about your body during the test.
Keep a positive attitude throughout the whole test and try to stay relaxed. If you start to feel nervous take a few deep breaths to relax.
Do the easiest problems first. Don't stay on a problem that you are stuck on.
Don't rush. Pace yourself. Read the entire question and look for keywords.
Write legibly. If the person grading the test can't read what you wrote, they'll mark it wrong.
Always read the whole question carefully.
If you don't know an answer, skip it. Go on with the rest of the test and come back to it later. Other parts of the test may have some information that will help you out with that question.
Don't worry if others finish before you. Focus on the test in front of you.
If you have time left when you are finished, look over your test. Make sure that you have answered all the questions. Only change an answer if you misread or misinterpreted the question because the first answer that you put is usually the correct one. Watch out for careless mistakes. Proofread your essay questions.

The Penn Valley Environmental Club is up and running! We have over 30 fourth and fifth graders who are excited to be involved in all the activities planned for this year. In order to try to raise money for the club for future projects (such as gardening around the school in the spring to beautify PV, purchase additional recycling bins, etc.), the students will be selling "recycled" crayons throughout the year. So.............
Do you have old crayons at home?
Crayons that are sad, broken, missing their wrapper, or just an ugly color?
Give these crayons a 2nd chance!!
Donate your old, sad crayons to the Penn Valley Environmental Club.
The students in the club will give these old crayons a new life!
Send them in with your student to put in the collection container in the lobby,
or to give to Ms. Haas, Mrs. Christy, or Mrs. Sheedy.
